The 9th Presidential Letter
Dear members and friends of FID, the Central European Diabetes Association!
In a few days we will meet at the International Danube Symposia, held durin June 19th-21st in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Ms. Prof. Dr. Theodora Temelkova-Kurktschiev has prepared an extraordinary program for us. Extremely pleasant is that 60 abstracts from FID-countries and other countries will be presented here. The program is already available at www.fid2008.com. All the abstracts will be published in "Diabetes, Stoffwechsel und Herz" No. 4/2008 , the official journal of our association and this journal will be available at the congress. We are very glad that this journal was recently integrated into the Science Citation Index system.
I hope that many of you will receive our journal. Some letters returned to us, due to address changing. Please update your contact address at Mr. Univ. Doz. Dr. Weitgasser, Salzburg.
The FID symposium organized together with the German Diabetes Association (DDG), at the annual DDG Congress in Munich, on 1st of Mai 2008, was a great success with more than 300 participants. The chairwoman was Ms. Prof. Dr. Erifili Hatziagelaki, Athena. The themes of our symposium were diet recommendation for diabetic patients in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Univ. Doc. Dr. Raimund Weitgasser), mediterranean food (Prof. Dr. Nicholas Katsilambros, Athena) and the effect of rich AGE-food on vascular function (Dr. Alin Stirban, Bad Oeynhausen). After the presentations, the participants discussed a lot on these topics. A summary can be accessed in german (please click).
In the DDG congress hall were 2 posters presenting the FID activities (download PDF).
Another important event took place on 16th and 17th Mai in Krakow. The president of the FID congress in 1993, Prof. Dr. Jacek Sieradzki, celebrated his 70th birthday. To this occasion, he organized an anniversary symposium. In the Jagellon University aula (inaugurated 1364), Prof. Dr. Krolewski from the Joslin Clinic opened the 4th Carpathian Diabetes Congress.

At the anniversary symposium have spoken Prof. Waldhäusl, Vienna, Prof. Raptis, Athena, Prof. Standl, Munich, and me, as president of FID along with some other FID members, for example, Prof. Schernthaner, Vienna.

Below are two pictures taken in 1993, at the FID symposium in Krakow. At the end of this years symposium, Prof. Dr. Jacek Sieradzki received a bunch of roses from his daughter (picture above, left). In the second picture (above right) one can see the clinic of Prof. Sieradzki. In front of the clinic, are Prof. Waldhäusl with a collaborator of Prof. Sieradzki, Dr. Czyganek. We found a modern diabetes clinic. Prof. Sieradzki´s wife, Dr. Barbara Sieradzki, works as an ophthalmologist here and she is the one to perform laser treatments.

At the end of the day, Prof. Sieradzki invited all his diabetologist friends, a lot of them FID members, to a camera concert in his house. A string quartet from Krakow Philharmony played music pieces composed by Mozart, Vivaldi and Offenbach.
At the end of my letter, I want to thank to our new webmaster, Dr. O. A. Stirban, for his
excellent work at our homepage.
